Teeth Whitening

Enhance the appearance of your smile with safe and effective teeth whitening at Pelago Dental, designed to boost your confidence with noticeably brighter results.

Causes of Teeth Discolouration

There are many reasons why teeth can become stained or discoloured.

Common causes include drinking coffee, tea, or red wine, smoking or using tobacco, not brushing and flossing regularly, and natural ageing.

Other reasons include certain medications, past injuries to your teeth, genetics, too much fluoride, or older dental work that may darken over time.

Types of Teeth Whitening

Knowing the different types of teeth whitening treatments available can help you make an informed decision based on your needs and lifestyle. Here are some of the most widely used methods:

In-clinic teeth whitening

This type of whitening is done by a dentist at the clinic using strong whitening gels and special equipment. It gives fast and noticeable results, often in just one visit.

At-home whitening kits

Available over the counter, these kits include products like whitening strips, gels, or trays designed for home use. They typically contain lower levels of bleaching agents, making them less powerful than professional in-clinic treatments, but they can still improve the brightness of your smile over time.

Common Myths About Teeth Whitening

Let’s clear things up by busting some of the most common myths.

Teeth whitening causes sensitivity

Fact: It’s true that some patients may experience temporary sensitivity after whitening, but this is usually mild and resolves on its own. When done under professional guidance, teeth whitening is safe and designed to minimise discomfort.

Whitening toothpaste is enough

Fact: While whitening toothpaste can reduce surface stains, it doesn’t contain the same bleaching agents used in professional treatments. For more significant and lasting whitening, in-clinic or dentist-supervised options are more effective.

DIY teeth whitening is safe

Fact: Using things like lemon juice, baking soda, or charcoal might seem like a cheap way to whiten your teeth, but they can actually wear down your enamel and harm your teeth. For safe and effective results, it’s best to see a dentist.

Teeth whitening is permanent

Fact: Whitening effects gradually fade due to lifestyle habits such as diet, smoking, and the natural aging process. While results can last for a long time, occasional maintenance treatments are often needed to keep your smile looking its best.

Teeth whitening is suitable for everyone

Fact: Not all patients are ideal candidates for teeth whitening. Individuals with untreated tooth decay, gum disease, or certain dental restorations (like crowns or veneers) may not see effective or safe results. A dental assessment is essential before starting any whitening treatment.

Tips to Keep Your Teeth White

Want to keep your teeth white after whitening? Here are some simple tips to help you maintain that bright smile:

  • Brush twice a day – Use fluoride toothpaste to clean away stains and stop plaque from building up.

  • Floss – Flossing helps clean the spots your toothbrush can’t reach and keeps your teeth looking fresh.

  • Watch what you eat and drink – Try to limit coffee and tea as they can all stain your teeth over time.

  • Quit Smoking – Smoking and other tobacco products can cause serious stains and affect your health.

  • Visit your dentist regularly – Regular check-ups and professional cleans help remove deeper stains and keep your teeth healthy.

What our patients say

Caravanning from Perth to Darwin and experienced pain in my gums. Although very busy they managed to fit me in and Ingrid took care of my problem for me. What a lovely, professional place. Not only that but they followed up with a call two days later just to make sure I was ok. Full marks to Pelago Dental. Thank you. 🙏

I was extremely happy with the service provided by Dr. Minkyu Kim, paid less for a filling then what I paid in Mandurah. Can highly recommend this Clinic.

These guys are truly awesome! Like me, I think most people find visiting the dentist to be a little bit scary. Not this clinic - they are amazing! Very welcoming and caring. Thank you Dr Kathryn Randall & assistant - you did a fantastic job. No pain and my teeth feel great! 😀

The girls were absolutely amazing. They fit me in for and emergency extraction and I've always had an issue with getting enough anaesthetic but they were already prepared. Definately recommend over the other options in town.
