What Is Teeth Discolouration?

Teeth discolouration refers to a change in the natural shade of your teeth, making them appear yellow, darkened, or stained.

This can affect the outer surface (extrinsic staining), the inner tooth structure (intrinsic staining), or both. Common causes include dietary habits, lifestyle choices, ageing, genetics, and some medical conditions.

Causes of Teeth Discolouration

Teeth can become discoloured for a range of reasons, both on the surface and within the tooth. Below are some of the most common causes of teeth discolouration:

Extrinsic Stains

Extrinsic stains form on the outer surface of the tooth enamel and are often caused by external factors such as diet and lifestyle habits. Common contributors include:

  • Food and Drinks: Dark-coloured items like berries, tomato-based sauces, soy sauce, coffee, tea, red wine, and cola can gradually stain teeth.

  • Tobacco Use: Smoking or using tobacco products can result in yellow or brown stains due to the presence of tar and nicotine.

  • Poor Oral Hygiene: Insufficient brushing and flossing can lead to plaque and tartar buildup, contributing to visible surface stains.

Intrinsic Stains

Intrinsic stains develop from within the tooth structure and are often the result of internal factors or issues during tooth development. Common causes include:

  • Dental Trauma: Injury to a tooth can cause it to darken over time as a reaction to the trauma.

  • Fluorosis: Excess fluoride intake during childhood, when teeth are developing, can result in white spots or brown staining.

  • Tetracycline Use: Taking tetracycline antibiotics during early tooth development may cause grey or brown discolouration deep within the tooth.

  • Ageing: Over time, enamel naturally thins, exposing the yellowish dentin layer beneath and making teeth appear darker.

Medical Conditions and Treatments

Some medical conditions, such as enamel hypoplasia and dentinogenesis imperfecta, can lead to intrinsic tooth discolouration. Additionally, treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy may affect the colour and appearance of teeth.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Our in-clinic teeth whitening treatments use advanced bleaching agents applied by dental professionals to effectively lift surface stains and brighten your smile. This safe and efficient procedure delivers immediate, noticeable results.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening Kits

Our custom take-home whitening kits let you brighten your smile from the comfort of home. Each kit includes tailor-made trays and professional-grade whitening gel, ensuring safe, consistent, and effective results at your own pace.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted from porcelain or composite material that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They’re an excellent option for concealing deep stains that don’t respond to whitening, as well as improving the appearance of chipped, misshapen, or uneven teeth.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, or caps, are designed to completely cover and protect teeth that are discoloured, damaged, or decayed. They offer both cosmetic enhancement and structural support, making them a great option for restoring teeth affected by severe staining, cracks, or extensive wear.

Regular Dental Check-ups and Cleanings

Routine dental visits are key to maintaining a healthy smile and preventing discolouration. Professional cleanings help remove plaque and tartar buildup, keeping your teeth looking their best and supporting long-term oral health.

Preserving Whitening Results

To keep your smile bright after whitening, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and be mindful of your daily habits. Brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding stain-causing foods and drinks, and not smoking can help extend your results. Using a straw for dark beverages, rinsing after meals, and occasionally using whitening toothpaste can also make a difference. For long-term brightness, consider touch-up treatments as needed.

What our patients say

Caravanning from Perth to Darwin and experienced pain in my gums. Although very busy they managed to fit me in and Ingrid took care of my problem for me. What a lovely, professional place. Not only that but they followed up with a call two days later just to make sure I was ok. Full marks to Pelago Dental. Thank you. 🙏

These guys are truly awesome! Like me, I think most people find visiting the dentist to be a little bit scary. Not this clinic - they are amazing! Very welcoming and caring. Thank you Dr Kathryn Randall & assistant - you did a fantastic job. No pain and my teeth feel great! 😀

The girls were absolutely amazing. They fit me in for and emergency extraction and I've always had an issue with getting enough anaesthetic but they were already prepared. Definately recommend over the other options in town.
