What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are a stable and secure option for replacing multiple missing teeth.
Unlike traditional removable dentures, these dentures are anchored to dental implants that are surgically placed into your jawbone. The implants act as strong supports for the dentures, helping to prevent slipping or movement while you eat or speak, so you can enjoy a more comfortable and confident smile.
How Does the Process for Implant-Supported Dentures Work?
Getting implant-supported dentures involves several steps to ensure a comfortable and successful outcome.
Diagnosis and Treatment Planning
Your dentist will review your medical history, examine your mouth, and take X-rays to assess your jawbone and overall oral health. This is also a great time to ask any questions you may have about the treatment.
If you and your dentist decide that implant-supported dentures are the best option for you, your treatment will be scheduled, and your journey toward a stable, confident smile will begin.
Placing the Dental Implants
To begin, any remaining teeth will be removed before placing your dental implants. You can choose to have this procedure done while awake with local anaesthetic or under sleep dentistry if you prefer to be asleep during treatment.
Typically, 4 to 6 implants are placed in the upper jaw, while 2 to 4 implants are placed in the lower jaw, which usually has stronger bone. The more implants you have, the more stable and secure your dentures will be.
The implants will need about 3 to 4 months to fuse (osseointegrate) with your jawbone. During this healing period, you will wear temporary traditional dentures so you can continue to eat and smile confidently while your implants heal.
Placing Abutments and Fitting Your Dentures
Once your implants have fully healed and fused with your jawbone, your dentist will place abutments onto the implants. These abutments connect to rubber attachments inside your dentures, securing them firmly in place.
Implant-supported dentures cover less of your gums compared to traditional dentures, making them more comfortable to wear. They improve your ability to eat and speak, are easier to maintain, and provide a more natural-looking smile.

Implant Supported Dentures FAQs
Are implant-supported dentures suitable for everyone?
Implant-supported dentures are a great option for many people, but their suitability depends on factors like your bone density, overall health, and specific dental needs.
Your dentist will carefully assess your situation to determine if this treatment is the right choice for you.
How many implants are needed for implant-supported dentures?
Usually, two to four dental implants are used to support a full set of implant-supported dentures. The exact number of implants needed will depend on your individual case and the type of dentures that best suit your needs.
How long do implant-supported dentures last?
With proper care and regular dental check-ups, implant-supported dentures can last many years and may even last a lifetime.
The dental implants themselves have a high success rate and can last for decades if you maintain good oral hygiene and attend your routine dental visits.
How do I care for my implant-supported dentures?
Caring for implant-supported dentures is much like caring for your natural teeth. It’s important to brush and floss regularly and to attend your routine dental check-ups. This helps maintain your oral health and extends the lifespan of your dentures and implants.
Can I eat all types of food with implant-supported dentures?
Yes! One of the biggest benefits of implant-supported dentures is that they restore your ability to chew comfortably. You can enjoy a wide variety of foods, including those that are often difficult to eat with traditional dentures, giving you more confidence at mealtimes.
