Gum Disease

Gum disease treatment is one of our areas of expertise at Pelago Dental. Our skilled team provides care and solutions tailored to every stage of the condition.

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a common condition that affects the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

It’s caused by a bacterial infection that leads to inflammation of the gums and, if not treated, can result in damage to the bone and tissues holding the teeth in place.

Types of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. Understanding the different types helps with early detection and proper treatment.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest and mildest stage of gum disease, marked by inflammation of the gums due to plaque buildup. This plaque contains bacteria that irritate the gum tissue.

Early symptoms include red, swollen gums that may bleed during brushing or flossing. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible with good oral hygiene and regular visits to Pelago Dental in Karratha.
If not addressed, it can develop into a more serious condition.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gum disease that results from untreated gingivitis. The infection spreads below the gumline, causing the gums to pull away from the teeth and form pockets where bacteria thrive. This can lead to bone loss and damage to the structures that keep your teeth in place.

Without timely treatment, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss. Management may involve deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), antibiotics, or surgical procedures, depending on the severity.

We Are Preferred Providers For:

Diagnosing Gum Disease

At Pelago Dental, our team takes a comprehensive approach to diagnosing gum disease. We carefully evaluate your gum health to determine the stage and extent of the condition, using methods such as:

Visual Examination

Our dental team will carefully examine your gums for signs of inflammation, redness, swelling, or bleeding. We’ll also check for plaque and tartar buildup around your teeth, which are common contributors to gum disease.

Measuring Pocket Depths

We use a small dental probe to measure the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums. Healthy gums usually have shallow pockets, while deeper ones may be a sign of advanced gum disease.

X-rays

X-rays help us evaluate the bone that supports your teeth. They reveal signs of bone loss, which is a key indicator of periodontal disease and essential for diagnosing the extent of the condition.

Personalised Gum Disease Treatments

At Pelago Dental, our team provides comprehensive care for gum disease, with treatment plans customised to suit your unique oral health needs. From early intervention to advanced care, we’re here to help restore and maintain healthy gums.

Deep Cleaning

This non-invasive treatment involves carefully cleaning the teeth to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gumline (scaling). Afterward, the tooth roots are smoothed (root planing) to promote gum healing and reduce the risk of further bacterial buildup.

Antibiotic Therapy

In certain cases, we may prescribe antibiotics to support the healing process by controlling bacteria and easing inflammation. These medications can be taken by mouth or placed directly into periodontal pockets during your cleaning appointment.

Surgical Interventions

When gum disease has caused significant damage, surgical intervention may be the best course of action. Procedures like flap surgery, bone grafts, and tissue regeneration work to rebuild supportive structures, preserve your teeth, and halt ongoing deterioration.

What our patients say

Caravanning from Perth to Darwin and experienced pain in my gums. Although very busy they managed to fit me in and Ingrid took care of my problem for me. What a lovely, professional place. Not only that but they followed up with a call two days later just to make sure I was ok. Full marks to Pelago Dental. Thank you. 🙏

The girls were absolutely amazing. They fit me in for and emergency extraction and I've always had an issue with getting enough anaesthetic but they were already prepared. Definately recommend over the other options in town.
