What is cosmetic dentistry?

Dentistry is important, not just for keeping your mouth and teeth healthy, but for your personal confidence. It can’t be denied that a bright, beautiful smile gives you that extra boost of confidence when you are going about your day.  You could say that all dentistry is cosmetic dentistry.  It is our goal as dentists to make all the work we do look as flawless and seamless as possible.

The term ‘cosmetic’ can be perceived as only for looks or vanity, but that’s not necessarily the case. In dentistry, it is sometimes better to think of the term ‘aesthetic’ rather than cosmetic, because dentists are always aiming for a natural look that makes people feel better about themselves.

Even giving your teeth a good clean can be considered ‘cosmetic’, if you choose to look at it that way!

What procedures are available to improve the appearance of your smile?

The least invasive cosmetic dentistry procedures include tooth whitening, Invisalign or braces for straightening, and composite bonding, which fixes the shape, colour and strength of your tooth. These treatments range in price and complexity.  Your dentist can discuss what is involved with you beforehand, as well as explaining the cost.

The next step is veneers and crowns, which involve reduction of the existing teeth.  The dental laboratory then makes these out of porcelain and they are fitted by your dentist.  There are also treatments available to replace any missing teeth.  This can result in you being able to feel more comfortable when you eat as well as being more confident.

These cosmetic dental treatments are available at Pelago Dental and will give you a smile that truly makes you feel happy.

Going beyond dentistry

To add to their skill-set and what they can offer their patients, many dentists now provide services that do point a little more towards the ‘Hollywood’ style of cosmetic updates, in the form of wrinkle relaxers and dermal fillers.

The benefit of receiving lip fillers from a dentist rather than another type of practitioner is that a dentist is comprehensively trained in the physiology of the face.  Also, achieving symmetry and carrying out procedures with precision and attention to detail is something we do all day every day.

A dental surgery provides a private, sterile environment for the procedure, which minimizes the risks involved and allows your treatment to be discreet if you desire this. A Dentist is also qualified and permitted to use a local anaesthetic. This is much more effective at eliminating any discomfort brought on by dermal filler placement.

Your dentist looks at lips in a highly detailed way all day.  So, we know what the very best results look like for your teeth, your mouth and your face.
